Description

As you will be aware, David Burn is retiring at the end of July 2025.

David was appointed as a Consultant Neurologist and Senior Lecturer in Newcastle in 1994, later becoming Professor of Movement Disorders Neurology and Honorary Consultant Neurologist for Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In 2011 he was appointed Director for Institute for Ageing and Health then as Director of Institute of Neuroscience. Between 2012 and 2017 he was also Director of the Newcastle NIHR-Biomedical Research Unit in Lewy Body Dementia, and between 2014 and 2017, Academic Clinical Director for Neurosciences Directorate, Newcastle upon Tyne, Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

On 1st January 2017, David took up the position of Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Medical Sciences. David's tenure as Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor has been highly successful. He oversaw the ‘Good to Great’ programme and reorganisation of research institutes within the faculty, creating new ways of thinking and removing thematic barriers to collaboration, as well as leading on the development of the Campus for Ageing and Vitality and the application for the successful award of Academic Health Science Centre status, deepening our partnerships with local NHS trusts and the City Council.

David has built a distinguished career marked by effective leadership through periods of substantial change and challenge.

We all wish David the very best as he enters this exciting new chapter of his life.
