NCLA Creative Saturday with Margaret Wilkinson - What More Do I Have to Write About? 25th Feb 2023

Description

Are you feeling anything but inspired lately?

Finding and developing new suggestions for short stories using newspapers and classic works of fiction as a starting point when you’re fresh out of ideas is the aim of this workshop.

Learn how to keep the inspiration coming by discovering not only where to look for new subject matter but once you’ve found it how to use, develop it and make a personal connection with it.

Turn the news items you read every day and the classic novels you’ve always loved into short stories with an emphasis on creating engaging protagonists who have something to say and secrets to hide.

NCLA: Creative Saturday with Linda France - Unlocking the Menagerie 25th Mar 2023

Description

All exciting writing depends on clear awareness, close observation infused with energy and imagination.

Looking at animals has produced some of our most vivid and much-loved examples of poetry and prose. In this day-long workshop we will visit the animal species behind glass in the collection of the Great North Museum to inspire and animate our own writing.

How do we see what we haven't noticed before and find the words to balance wonder and grief at this time of the sixth mass extinction? What happens when you unlock your own inner menagerie on the page?

NCLA: Creative Saturday with Sean O'Brien - On Consulting an Ordnance Survey Map 29/04/2023

Description

Many of us like maps both for their practical uses and for their own sake.

They invite the exercise of the imagination, combining both place and time in a set of suggestive symbols. In this session we will consider the map as fact and as access to memory, dream and revelation.
